Material

Cultured marble is an engineered stone product made from crushed limestone or marble particles mixed with polyester resin and pigments. The material is poured into molds and finished with a protective gel-coat surface that provides a smooth, glossy finish.

Budget

Material

Plan for ROUGHLY $40-$50 per square foot for cultured marble countertops plus the cost of labor to install. Integrated sinks can help reduce installation costs by eliminating the need to purchase and install a separate sink.

Cultured marble has a nonporous gel-coated surface that resists moisture and everyday staining. Unlike natural stone, it does not need to be sealed. It is very water resistant.

Cultured marble does scratch and is not recommended for kitchen use. The matte finish shows scratching much less than the gloss finish. White colors may show a slight yellowing over time due to UV. Cultured marble is not heat resistant.

Maintenance

Matte surfaces may be cleaned using a rough pad, but gloss surfaces will show scratching from this pad or harsh cleaners. The gel-coat can be buffed to create a smooth finish again.

Environmental Impact

Environmental Impact

Cultured marble uses mineral fillers combined with synthetic resins, which can reduce the amount of natural stone required compared with solid stone products. However, the petroleum-based resins, manufacturing process, and limited recyclability contribute to its environmental impact

Integrated Sink Options

One of the biggest advantages of cultured marble is the availability of integrated sink bowls. These sinks are molded directly into the countertop, creating a smooth transition without the seams found around traditional undermount sinks. This makes cleaning easier and reduces areas where water, dirt, and bacteria can collect.
